Powerfull Doa

Ini adalah doa yang mengesankan. Lukas 18:27 Masalah dengan banyak orang tidak percaya bahwa Tuhan akan membuka jendela dan mencurahkan berkat-berkat tanpa langkah-langkah pada kehidupan kita masing-masing. Kita tidak sadar salah satu tempat atau upacara yang diperlukan untuk menerima mereka. Saya menyarankan siapa pun untuk membuktikan Tuhan. Ia adalah setia dalam firman-Nya. Allah tidak dapat berbohong dan janji-janji-Nya adalah benar. Tiga hal yang pasti akan berhasil dengan anda minggu ini, saya berarti Anda yang membaca pesan ini: (1) Anda akan mendapat bantuan dari seseorang yang tidak mengharapkan, (2) Anda akan terlalu relevan untuk diabaikan, (3) Anda akan memiliki sebuah perjumpaan dengan Allah dan Anda tidak akan pernah menjadi sama. Doa untuk Anda hari ini adalah: Bahwa mata yang membaca pesan ini jangan melihat kejahatan di sekitar. Tangan yang mengirimkan pesan ini tidak bekerja dengan sia-sia. COMO DIZER "CHEQUE SEM FUNDO" EM INGLÊS

Já há algum tempo andam me pedindo para dar alguns collocations com a palavra cheque em inglês. Eu estava esperando a hora certa para poder atender aos pedidos. Como podem ver a hora certa chegou. Antes de continuar, quero avisar a todos que em inglês há duas formas de escrevermos a palavra ‘cheque’. A primeira é a forma americana, que é ‘check’; a segunda, a britânica, que é ‘cheque’. Embora a forma de escrever seja diferente, a pronúncia é a mesma. Então nada de desespero. Dito isto, acrescento que neste post adoto a grafia americana - ‘check’ - em todos os casos. Além disto, tenho de falar também que ‘talão de cheque’ em inglês ‘checkbook’. Já para dizer ‘canhoto do cheque’, basta dizer ‘check stub’ ou apenas ‘stub’. Agora vamos aos collocations! O título do post é como dizer ‘cheque sem fundo’, também conhecido como ‘cheque borrachudo’ em inglês; então, anote aí que para dizer isto você deverá dizer ‘bounced check’, ‘rubber check’ ou simplesmente ‘bad check’. Na Inglaterra também dizem ‘dud check’. No mundo dos negócios a expressão será ‘dishonered check’. Outra que causa estranheza é ‘cheque em branco’. Você acredita que eu já ouvi alguns alunos de inglês dizendo ‘check in white’? Claro que tive de me intrometer na conversa e dizer que o correto é ‘blank check’. Sempre me intrometo também quando vejo alguém querendo dizer ‘checão’. Sabe aquele ‘cheque gordo’, tipo um cheque de um milhão de reais? Um cheque com um valor extremamente alto é o que chamamos de ‘checão’ ou ‘cheque gordo’. Em inglês, acredite eles também dizem, informalmente, ‘fat check’. Além desta combinação [collocation], você também poderá dizer ‘big check’ ou ‘large check’. E o tal do ‘cheque pré-datado’? Ele se tornou tão comum no nosso dia a dia que não pode ficar de fora deste post. Em inglês, lembre-se, dizemos ‘post-dated check’. Aproveito aqui para dizer que ‘pré-datar um cheque’ é ‘pre-date a check’. Ou seja, ‘pre-date’ é o verbo que eles usam. Assim como nós fazemos em português.

Língua Inglesa: o que quer dizer "by hook or crook"

Digamos que você esteja lendo e de repente se depara com a sentença: 'he said he would go to the party by hook or crook'. A única coisa que você sabe é que alguém disse que vai à festa. No entanto, o quer significa o tal do 'by hook or crook'? É o que você vai aprender se continuar lendo a dica de hoje. Para não enrolar muito você. Afinal, tempo é tudo na internet e na vida, anote aí que 'by hook or crook' equivale a 'de um jeito ou de outro'. Não importa se os métodos serão justo ou injustos, bons ou maus. O que realmente importa é que a pessoa vai fazer qualquer coisa para conseguir aquilo que ela quer. Veja aí mais alguns exemplos: Well, I'll put an end to this by hook or crook. [Bom, vou dar um fim nisto de um jeito ou de outro]. I'll pass this course by hook or crook. [Vou passar neste curso de um jeito ou de outro]. They got this desire to make money by hook or chook. [Eles têm este desejo de fazer dinheiro de um jeito ou de outro]. Para encerrar a dica, quero acrescentar que também pode ser 'by hook or by crook'. Além disto, é bom acrescentar também que o enunciado 'by hook or crook' é um expressão idiomática. Caso você não queira usá-la, então diga "one way or another." Tudo depende da sua criatividade em usar as palavrase expressões.

Συμμετοχή του WWF Ελλάς στην έκθεση Remap

Με το έργο Apple of My Eye –“wishful doodles” της Δανάης Κώτση, το WWF Ελλάς συμμετέχει για δεύτερη φορά στο ReMap, μία διεθνή πλατφόρμα σύγχρονης τέχνης στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Κεραμικού και του Μεταξουργείου. Δύο χρόνια μετά το “Black Box” (συμμετοχή του WWF Ελλάς το 2007), το Apple of my Eye (κόρη οφθαλμού) είναι μια υπαίθρια εικαστική εγκατάσταση γεμάτη αντιθέσεις. Ένα νεαρό ελάφι αναζητά απαντήσεις στο βεβαρημένο αστικό περιβάλλον και το ασπρόμαυρο φόντο μας καλεί να σχεδιάσουμε ξανά από την αρχή. Η Δανάη Κώτση χρησιμοποιεί υλικά και διαδικασίες φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον (το έργο, αφού υποστεί τη φυσική φθορά του περιβάλλοντος, θα ανακυκλωθεί) και εφαρμόζει ψηφιακούς κανόνες σε ένα πραγματικό τρισδιάστατο περιβάλλον, με τη χρήση «αναλογικών layers». Με αυτόν τον τρόπο παρεμβαίνει στον χώρο και σχεδιάζει επάνω του μια δεύτερη πραγματικότητα. Έναν κόσμο που θα μπορούσε να είναι κι αλλιώς. Το Apple of My Eye –“wishful doodles” θα βρίσκεται στη θέση 12, στον ανοιχτό χώρο της Λεωνίδου 36 στον Κεραμικό μέχρι τις 4 Οκτωβρίου.

Como se diz "fazer cera" em Inglês

'Fazer cera' é o mesmo que 'fazer hora', 'fazer onda', 'ficar de onda', 'enrolar', 'embromar'. A definição é: 'trabalhar devagar ou fingir que trabalha', 'deliberadamente demorar para fazer algo ou atrasar algo', ou, no jogo de futebol, 'ficar com a bola parada o máximo de tempo possível para ganhar tempo'. E em inglês!? O que dizer para expressar esta ideia?

A primeira palavra que me vem à cabeça para este tipo de atitude é 'stall'. Para tirar minha dúvida dei uma olhada em alguns dicionários e a definição que encontrei foi:

STALL: [informal] to deliberately delay because you are not ready to do something, answer questions etc [deliberadamente demorar para fazer algo por não estar preparado para fazer, demorar para responder a perguntas, etc]

Diante desta definição fico feliz em dizer que 'stall' é a palavra que queremos neste caso. Os exemplos:

• Quit stalling and answer my question! [Deixe de fazer cera e responda à minha pergunta!]
  
• She doesn't want to write the report, so she is stalling. [Ela não quer fazer o relatório, então está fazendo cera.]
• I can stall him for a few minutes. [Consigo enrolar ele por alguns minutos.]

Outra palavra que também me veio à cabeça é 'dawdle', que de acordo com os dicionários refere-se ao ato de 'do something or go somewhere very slowly, taking more time than is necessary' [fazer algo ou ir a algum lugar muito lentamente, levando mais tempo do que o necessário]. Acredito que o sentido é o mesmo, não é? Logo temos mais exemplos:

• Don't dawdle - we're late already! [Não faça cera - nós já estamos atrasado!]
• Quit dawdling and get dressed or you'll be late for school. [Pare de enrolar e vá se arrumar ou você vai se atrasar para a escola.]

O curioso é que na maioria das vezes que a palavra 'dawdle' é usada ela vem acompanhada de algo se referindo à 'school'. Logo, acho melhor ficar no 'stall' mesmo. Pois nos exemplos visto ele se aplica a todas as situações.

Como dizer "marmita" em Inglês

Como dizer 'marmita' em Inglês é uma das perguntas mais curiosas que há para se responder. Muita gente diz que isto não existe nos países de língua Inglesa. Outros dão respostas muito curtas e que às vezes não vão direto ao ponto. Neste post vou ajudar você a entender um pouco da cultura da 'quentinha'. Para nós, brasileiros, há vários termos: 'marmita', 'marmitex' e 'quentinha'. De modo geral é tudo a mesma coisa. O que muda mesmo é a região. Ou seja, em algumas regiões do Brasil usa-se mais uma palavra do que a outra. Todo trabalhador de contrução [ou não] sabe o que é. Algumas vezes eu também me faço valer de uma 'marmitex' na hora do almoço. Muitas pessoas costumam dizer que 'lunch box' é a 'marmita'. No entanto, 'lunch box' está mais para o que as crianças levam à escola. Ou seja, 'lunch box' está mais para 'lancheira' do que 'marmita' propriamente dita. Além de 'lunch box' eles também dizem 'lunch pail' ou 'lunch kit'. Outra palavra que costuma aparecer para 'marmita' é 'packed lunch'. Esta começa a fazer mais sentido! O problema é que 'packed lunch' costuma ser carregado dentro de uma 'lunch box', ou em uma 'tiffin box'. E o que é uma 'tiffin box'?  O problema é que 'tiffin box' ou apenas 'tiffin' [almoço rápido] é uma palavra originária do Inglês indiano e que se tornou comum no inglês britânico. Consequentemente, não é tão conhecido assim por todos os falantes nativos de língua Inglesa. Contudo, ela está registrada no Merrian Webster, principal dicionário de Inglês para os americanos. Então o que os americanos fazem? Packed lunch' levado ao trabalho vai em uma 'brown-bag lunch', comumente chamada de 'brown bag'. Isto tudo é chamado por eles de 'brownbagging'. Alguns dicionários definem 'brownbag' como um verbo, cujo significado é 'levar o almoço para o trabalho geralmente envolvido em uma sacola [de papel] marrom'. Enfim, tudo é uma questão cultural. Encontrar a palavra certa para definir a nossa 'marmita', 'marmitex' ou 'quentinha' dependerá muito de onde estamos. O melhor a fazer é explicar à outra pessoa o que é isto e como isto é parte do dia a dia de muitos trabalhadores brasileiros. Mas se você quiser falar sobre aquela embalagem na qual a comida é geralmente colocada então diga 'aluminium foil paper dining box cover'.

Como dizer 'gambiarra' em inglês?

Uma leitora pergunta como é que se diz "gambiarra" em Inglês. Eis a repsosta: 'Gambiarra' é, entre outras coisas, um improviso, um 'ajuste' uma invenção,tudo feito de qualquer jeito e que resolve certo problema durante determinado período. Lembrando que o período geralmente se prolonga até a 'gambiarra' começar a dar defeito e ser, então, substituída por outra 'gambiarra' [mais moderna e prática]. Um termo sinônimo para 'gambiarra' em português é 'quebra-galho'. Enfim, qual brasileiro que nunca fez, viu ou ouviu falar de uma boa 'gambiarra'? Em Inglês há o termo informal 'jerry-rig', usado como verbo. Dizem que esta expressão veio de 'jury-rig', cujo significado é o mesmo. A saber: 'improvisar', 'bolar algo para uso emergencial'. Ou seja, ambas são verbos, logo significam 'fazer uma gambiarra'. Veja os exemplos: The survivors of the wreck jerry-rigged some fishing gear... = Os sobreviventes do naufrágio fizeram uma gambiarra com os equipamentos de pesca. He jerry-rigged his carburetor open with a paper clip and some aluminum foil... = Ele fez uma gambiarra no carburador com um clip e papel alumínio. Além de 'jerry-rig' temos também o menos informal que é 'quick fix'. Porém, 'quick fix' é mais usado como substantivo. Ou seja, é a 'gambiarra' propriamente dita. Vamos aos exemplos: This is just a quick fix, but I think it'll do... = Isto é apenas uma gambiarra, mas acho que vai funcionar. A quick fix is not what I want... = Um quebra galho não é o que eu quero. Para os mais saudosistas temos ainda uma expressão originada no seriado MacGyver. Lembram que o cidadão era cheio de apresentar soluções rápidas e práticas para os problemas que surgiam? Lembram que ele usava qualquer coisa para fazer as gambiarras dele? Então, em inglês quando você precisa dar uma de MacGyver, eles dizem 'do a MacGyver on something': Well, it looks like I'll have to do a Macgyver on it... = É... Parece que eu vou ter de fazer uma gambiarra neste treco. He had no money to take his car to a good mechanic, so he just did a MacGyver on it... = Ele estava sem dinheiro para levar o carro a um bom mecânico, então fez uma gambiarra nele. That's it, folks. São três expressões, três palavras: 'jerry-rig', 'quick fix' e 'do a MacGyver on something'. Polycenter's Visiting Professor

Em recentes entendimentos mantidos com a direção do Polycenter, passou a integrar o quadro de docentes da Instituição, como professor visitante, o norteamericano Stephen Selka (Steve Selka), doutor em Antropologia (PHD) pela Universidade do Estado de Nova York, autor da obra "The Sisterhood of Boa Morte in Brazil: Harmonious Mixture, Black Resistance and the Politics of Religious Practice.” Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology. Em sua recente permanência, em Cachoeira, o Prof. Steve Selka  ministrou aulas e proferiu palestras no Polycenter para alunos do curso avançado de língua Inglesa sobre assuntos de reconhecida importância lingüística e cultural.

According to the Brazilian Geographical and Statistical Institute (IBGE), Brazil reached 191,5 millions residents last July.São Paulo (11 million) continues to be the largest Brazilian city, followed by Rio de Janeiro (6,2 million), Salvador (3 million), Brasília (2,6 million), Fortaleza (2,5 million), Belo Horizonte (2,4 million), Curitiba (1,8 million), Manaus (1,7 million), Recife (1,5 million) and Belém (1,4 million), which replaces Porto Alegre in the ranking of the 10th largest Brazilian cities. Excluding the capitals, the ranking of the most populated cities remains unchanged, headed by Guarulhos-SP (1,3 million) and followed by Campinas-SP (1,1 million), São Gonçalo-RJ (991 thousand), Duque de Caxias-RJ (872 thousand) and Nova Iguaçu-RJ (865 thousand). 18% of the population (one in each five) lives in major cities of Brazil. Another interesting figure is related to the less populated city of Brazil; located in the State of São Paulo, Bora has only 837 inhabitants!
